And I really ask myself why it should be any different with any kind of dog -or even worse: any other animal.
You may be right that pitbulls face hard times due to their bad reputation and that they are a breed often misunderstood, BUT: they are dogs. JUST dogs and just like any other breed out there. Isn't that the reason why this BSL shit is so fucked up?
And now you come to put them on a pedestral. I'm not really sure if putting them in a light where they are always the "victims" the ones "abused" etc. is really the way to go and really close to the truth. You want to help them out of their "special position" as the "mean and vicious dog breed" just to put them right into the next category they don't fit.
To me-and I work with dogs professionally- pitbulls are just the same as all the kangals, shepherds, boder collies, dobermans, poodles, labradors and so on, I worked with. Of course every breed holds some special traits...but nevertheless: pitbulls are just dogs.
When I'm "allowed" to create a vicious wolf character, when I'm allowed to create a crazy bloodthirsty Barzoi, corgie, dachshund - you name it.. I AM allowed to create a murderous pitbull character. Nothing of these "portrayals" tells anything about real animals. Wolves are rather shy and extremely loving animals - vicious? Fearless?! Oh come on!
But they have a bad reputation that claims them to be vicious and bad...they are "misunderstood"(in more than one way...claiming that they are "holy" animals is just as bad as pretending they are evil)....and now someone that draws them in snarling and openly aggressive poses comes to me to tell me that my picure of a pit-mix is sickening. Something clearly screams hypocrite to me.
Don't get me wrong: it's good to have people out there that are helping pitbulls- they need it.
But you don't help them if you attack pictures of clearly fictional characters - especially when your own gallery makes clear that you advocate only for "your" animal and breed.
And just to round it up: the character you critized in my case has a story strongly connected to the topic. Instead of just staring at the surface maybe next time you want to at least try to understand the motives behind something before you attack it...hm...sounds a bit like the way most people deal with pitbulls, doesn't it? Judging without knowing or understanding...
I'm open to answer questions, yes, and I bet a lot of people are as well.
